What's Your Politics?

After taking the online quiz about how I identified with a political parties, the results that I received were a little unexpected. It was not your typical "Republican, Democrat" quiz. The results incorporated the social aspect along with the commonly used economic aspect, and also related different areas of the graph to different leaders and their ideologies so you would know how you relate. My results said that I was in between Collectivism and Libertarian. I always considered myself to be a Republican, as my views on certain issues generally agree with most of their ideologies, though I think the results of the online party quiz is a decent representation as well. Libertarian could be a good representation of a party I can relate to in the sense that I do agree with a smaller government with  more individual freedoms, though at the same time, I think a more structured government is ideal.

Genocide Project

Those who displayed the posters of the genocide project used the rhetorical appeals of ethos, logos, and pathos to reach their audience of students and faculty. Much controversy was caused by this project, as many students even protested against it. This was mainly because of the ethical dispute that follows this particular subject. The genocide project displayed pictures of aborted fetus' and genocide in other countries, and listed facts and effects of such things. The appeal of logos in the project, says to the audience that it is morally and ethically wrong to participate in such activities as abortion or genocide. The ethos of the project appeals to the audience, as most people see it as "morally wrong" to take such lengths as to have an abortion or to think that genocide is just. The appeal of pathos portrays a sense of emotion to the audience because it is a touchy subject for most people, to discuss the topic of abortion and genocide. Also, it is somewhat alarming to see large posters displaying pictures of such things in the middle of a college campus.

Response to Thoughts from the Tao-te Ching

Lao-Tzu was and ancient Chinese philosopher, whose writings and ideology led to the beliefs of Taoism. He wrote the Tao-te Ching as basic guidelines for rulers of early China so that they may lead a successful and powerful country with peace and happiness. He focussed mainly on the importance of keeping peace and not resorting to violence as a solution. "Weapons are the tools of violence; / all decent me detest them" (19). He relates most to a Libertarian government system, in which there is very little government involvement encouraged. In paragraph 37, he writes tells of how an overbearing government cannot be successful, and the outcomes when the Master is not overcontrolling of the people. According to Lao-Tzu, the ideal leader must have trust in his people in order to gain trust from them, deals with issues in a peaceful manner, and is not power hungry.

Rhetorical Analysis Advertisement

Environmentalist Advertisement:

In this advertisement, there are progressive pictures of an exhaust pipe with a balloon on the end of it being filled with carbon dioxide emissions until the balloon eventually explodes. The point of this advertisement is to bring awareness to the general public-especially people who drive cars-that car emissions are very hazardous to the environment and are destroying the planet.
The logos in this particular advertisement is that it is harmful to the planet to drive cars with terrible emissions, to get the checked regularly, or use other modes of transportation if available to reduce the amount of pollution being emitted into the atmosphere. The ethos in this advertisement sends a message to the viewer that it is ethically wrong to pollute the environment and that everyone should do what they can to cut down on the amount of exhaust being emitted by their cars. The pathos in the advertisement can give the audience a feeling of sympathy and remorse for letting the problem of pollution to progress so much that it is destrying our planet.
